Metrology Facility demand at all time high with automotive, medical & reverse engineering projects

21 December 2017

Silverstone Park Metrology Facility will go into 2018 busier than ever after a surge in demand for its services from within the surrounding Silverstone Technology Cluster.

The Facility opened in summer 2016 and is managed by Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence – the world leader in the science of metrology.

Metrology is the process of measuring very often complex components and end products to ensure integrity ahead of final production. Hexagon’s machines at Silverstone Park are capable of measuring to sub-micron levels – one micron is equivalent in width to 1000th of a millimetre.

The Facility is the only sub-contract inspection metrology facility in the UK and in the second half of 2017 it has been called on by all manner of advanced engineering organisations.

Hexagon Regional Sales Manager John Drover commented: “We have also been working closely with a number of companies based at Silverstone Park such as Flybrid, David Brown Automotive and Twintec-Baumot as well as others further afield including start-up businesses and SMEs which we are always keen to support.

“It is 18 months since the Facility opened and it is great news to be ending our first full calendar year with demand for our services at such a high.”

Looking ahead to 2018, Hexagon will replace at least three highly sophisticated pieces of equipment at Silverstone Park – these include two Global Advantage co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and a TIGO SF.

“The machinery we work with is always brand new to ensure our customers receive the best levels of service available,” added John.

Machines in the Facility include:

And continued John: “Combined, these offer just about every conceivable type of process available in metrology.

“That has been reflected in the versatility of the types of projects we have been asked to help with lately – these have ranged from areas of engines and gearboxes to medical devices with reverse engineering thrown in.”

Meanwhile details of the first Silverstone Park Metrology Network event of 2018 inside the Facility will be announced soon. The events attract senior engineering figures as guest speakers and further support start-ups and SMEs by introducing them to potential new business opportunities.
