Silverstone Park’s Metrology Facility has received another thumbs up from an influential industry figure – Commercial Director for leading special vehicle operations (SVOs) and powertrain company RML Group.
Simon was guest speaker at the latest Silverstone Metrology Network’s event. These are geared towards supporting engineering SMEs and start-up companies by providing them with insights, access to key contacts and potentially opening doors in terms of business opportunities.
The Facility is the only dedicated sub-contract inspection metrology facility in the UK. It is run jointly by Silverstone Park developer MEPC and Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence – the world leader in the science of metrology and in just over a week (16 July) will celebrate its first anniversary…
Simon commented: “The Metrology Facility here is a really good idea. It’s got the location – not just the access into Silverstone but also it’s central to the companies in the surrounding Technology Cluster. And of course it’s got the expertise.
“It gives SMEs that extra capacity. As an example, when we expand as a business we could not do what we do without our supply chain and other people we rely on – this means hiring in expertise in other areas and that could include certain specialists at Silverstone Park or the University of Warwick where they have an EV and battery test facility.
“Smaller businesses simply won’t have the funds to invest in metrology equipment as there are always pressures to invest elsewhere. But this Facility still gives them access to metrology and helps them to fulfil capacity and capability.
“Whether it’s us or other SMEs… metrology is a service that engineering manufacturing companies are always looking for to achieve the precision that’s demanded by the marketplace.”
Simon’s presentation included the importance of metrology and materials analysis, emerging EV technologies and high performance supercar technologies – areas in which Wellingborough-based RML excel.
He added: “It was good to touch on topics such as outside influences and staying agile.
“Things such as how Brexit affects us, how the current exchange rate has made us more cost effective or, when it comes to being agile, reacting to the environment around you… moves from combustion engines to more efficient EV platforms, technology trends, Government financing etc.
“At the end I had a queue of people wanting to talk to me which is always a good sign.”
