Filling the skills gap

Filling the skills gap for race mechanics in motorsport

Silverstone Park is home to the National College for Motorsport along with over 50 high performance technology and motorsport businesses.

Jim Harrod, Head of School at National College for Motorsport talks about why Silverstone Park is the perfect location for them.

“The National College for Motorsport came to Silverstone in 2003 as part of the national Centre of Vocational Excellence programme because Silverstone is the home of motorsport in the UK.

“We found several years ago that there was a skills gap in the motorsport industry for race mechanics so being based at Silverstone Park allows us to access the race teams based around Silverstone to try and fulfil their needs and ours and to get our students into the motorsport industry.

“The students like Silverstone because this is the home of motorsport in the UK. The staff like it here for the same reason but probably more so because they have a passion for giving something back to the industry. Race car preparation is the basis of our cause here and work ethic is something that we work on heavily as that’s what race teams are looking for.

“Most students will go into motorsport as an apprentice at national level and then aspire to higher levels including Formula One.”
