The Silverstone Park Schools Programme re-commences next week with cutting edge tech companies at the innovation campus set to open their doors to secondary school students to not just show them their business activity but also the ‘jobs of the future’.
Feedback from students who experienced the programme in the last year suggests well over two thirds of them would now consider careers in tech and/or working for companies at Silverstone Park (CLICK HERE for separate story).
Below is feedback from the programme’s three partner schools during 2023/24’s activity.
Michael Hobbs, Teacher of Science, Kingsthorpe College: “We took a range of students to visit companies at Silverstone Park – a number from backgrounds that are under-represented in STEM industries due to the barriers that they face in even considering a career in this field.
“The day transformed the pupils’ thinking, opening their eyes to the great opportunities that exist and showed them what is available and possible, right on their doorstep It is no understatement to say that this, for some, will have changed the course of their career.”
Clodagh Shanahan, Curriculum Leader of Business, The Buckingham School: “The workshops have enabled our Year 9 students to learn about the different industries and the skills needed for a variety of different careers.
“Students are extremely engaged on the day and this leads to an increased understanding of the skills required to succeed in the world of work.”
Ann Warner, Learning Leader for PSHE, Sponne School: “We are grateful to the businesses who volunteer to run workshops or be in the ‘have your say’ panel where our Year 8 students can ask them questions about their career journeys.
“Our students had a great time and felt they learnt a lot from the day – for example, from how carbon fibre is used in motorsport to teamwork, presenting skills and creativity.”
