Live BBC coverage for Inspiration for Innovation schools/careers project

22 February 2019

Silverstone Park’s pilot schools project ‘Inspiration for Innovation’ enjoyed a further boost this week with around half an hour’s live air time devoted to it on BBC Radio Northampton’s breakfast show.

Reporter Tom Percival visited Silverstone Park to interview business leaders about awareness among secondary school students in the region of the careers pathways that are available to them.

These included the estate’s Commercial Director Roz Bird and the managing directors of three businesses based on site: Tobias Knichel of Punch Flybrid, Tim Maccabee of Ducati UK and Chris Horton of Performance Projects.

They are among 20 volunteer businesses participating in Inspiration for Innovation. Each is visiting three partner schools to engage directly with students in an effort to make them more aware of the business world after they leave education, the types of careers they might consider and how to achieve them.

The project is a joint venture between Silverstone Park and Gaia Innovation which specialise in careers outreach and pathways opportunities within schools.

The feature, broadcast to approximately 80,000 households in the region, not only further informed parents and youngsters about Inspiration for Information but also achieved exposure for several of the project’s volunteer businesses.

During her interview, Roz Bird said that inspiration for Innovation had already begun to highlight areas which could be addressed to improve careers information for youngsters.

She said: “The fact is that young people are very ill informed about the opportunities… Not just the new opportunities coming through in new sectors which is probably quite hard for anyone to keep track of but even the local pathway information. And I am quite worried about this because the local information doesn’t necessarily exist…”
