Silverstone Park businesses in UK drive to boost female representation in motorsport
02 August 2022
Silverstone Park businesses Enovation Consulting and Hexagon are collaborating to play an important role in a global push to encourage more young women to consider careers in motorsport.
The two businesses’ coding sessions are an integral part of UK motorsport governing body Motorsport UK’s events for the FIA Girls on Track UK programme.
Their sessions provide primary and secondary school-aged youngsters (aged 8-18) with early coding skills using Lego’s advanced ‘WeDo 2.0’ kits.
This can involve building from scratch a variety of Lego models and then programming them to move with coding transmitted from mobile devices.
One of the most recent events, attended by 150 girls from five local schools, was hosted at the Silverstone Interactive Museum during British Formula 1 Grand Prix week.
Hexagon’s Claire Waterson said: “The next generation engineers need new ideas, broader skills and a passion for technology to make better, more sustainable products and help the UK lead global innovation.
“I am delighted to be working with Motorsport UK’s Girls on Track UK initiative. We are especially excited to expand our coding activities, which we designed to bridge the skills and gender gap in coding and engineering, and get more girls involved in what I think is a very rewarding and exciting career.”
Enovation founder Dr Cristiana Pace is an FIA Girls On Track UK Ambassador and also Motorsport UK’s representative on world governing body the FIA’s Environmental & Sustainability Commission.
She added: “I have been an ambassador of the Girls on Track UK programme since its very early days and have been lucky enough to see it grow and thrive.
“We are proud to be an official STEM partner of the programme, working with hundreds of girls every year.
“Watching them overcome their doubts and leave the events with more confidence in themselves than they had when they arrived is incredibly rewarding and we are already seeing the results of this in the workforce, which I am sure will only continue in the future.”
The coding sessions add to activities such as race car preparation, first aid, karting, reaction games and presenting to camera.
Motorsport UK CEO Hugh Chambers commented: “We are delighted with the hard work being undertaken by Enovation Consulting and Hexagon as partners to Motorsport UK’s Girls on Track UK programme.
“One of our missions is to inspire and encourage more women into our sport and we want to do that in a dynamic and engaging way.
“Our relationship with Enovation Consulting and Hexagon provides interesting and engaging activities for those in the Girls on Track UK community to experience.
“We look forward to continuing to work with our partners to progress our mission and carry on the momentum and growth of the Girls on Track UK initiative.”
Hexagon is the world leader in the science of metrology (precision measurement). It manages the Silverstone Park Metrology Facility where its machines can measure and inspect componentry to within 1.3 microns.
