Thought leadership: “Ten year cat gen project worth it for lessons learnt”

Delta Cosworth’s ‘cat-gen’ technology (see separate article) has been developed under the eye of Delta co-founder Simon Dowson and Engineering Director Scott Herring, with a team that also includes Development & Integration Engineer Pauline Dumont – featured in our 2021 International Women in Engineering Day interviews.

Interestingly, the technology was first suggested a decade ago by the late Nick Carpenter who founded Delta (nee Motorsport) with Simon.

Scott said: “Looking back to then, knowing what we know now, we might have thought long and hard about going down this route.

“But the answer would still have been ‘yes’ because we’re a company that always likes a challenge and it has taught us so much along the way – things we can apply now to other projects.

“Even if some of the core things failed, all the things we have learnt – for example how do you make things spin really fast without flying off shafts? – pay us back as a group of people trying to engineer solutions.

“The market is going in the right direction for cat-gen – at every interim step of its development we’ve said ‘yes, we’ll continue’ – because the world needs something like this and we believe we have the right answer.”
