Spyder Club founder runs London Marathon for charity

Lizzi Smith-Young, co-founder of Silverstone Park occupier Spyder Club, raised more than £2,500 for charity when she completed last weekend’s London Marathon whose official timing system also ran smoothly thanks in part to her and husband Mark’s motorcycling business.

Lizzi was running in support of Concern UK which delivers life-saving and life-changing interventions to some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.

What’s more, she ran the Marathon’s gruelling 26.2 miles in four hours and 46 minutes – under her target time of five hours.

Lizzi said:

“The last six to eight miles were really hard, but all the runners get their name on their shirt and when you hear people, including Mark, along the route shouting ‘Go on, Lizzi’ it spurs you on.

“You do see lots of things that pull at the heart strings, particularly people running with pictures of people they’ve lost.

“I was also briefly close to Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts who became the fastest woman in history to complete the Marathon with an ileostomy.

“There was even a guy running in a rhino costume and a group in full-on firefighters’ costumes who looked like they would melt inside!”

For the second consecutive year, Spyder Club also helped ensure timing for each of the Marathon’s events ran smoothly.

Two of its Ducati Multistrada motorbikes – ridden by workshop manager Andy Peck and fellow Silverstone Circuit instructor Gareth Roberts – were used to swiftly move between timing points prior to each race starting to re-set the clocks.

Lizzi added: “Spyder were really grateful to be able to partner with Running Imp again – the London Marathon raises so much money for charity so it’s a real honour to support; plus being able to ride two Ducati motorbikes on closed roads is always pretty special!”

London marked the second marathon that Lizzi has run since her first just six weeks earlier – the Moyleman event in West Sussex.

“London is an amazing atmosphere, but I don’t like running on the roads,” continued Lizzi.

“I much prefer running in the hills, like the Moyleman. You have the countryside and the up and down element which is more interesting but sadly only sheep cheering for you!”
